Confirmed: Cameron Durow set for MXGP debut in Italy

South African rider Cameron Durow is set to achieve a lifelong ambition this weekend as he prepares to make his MXGP World Championship debut at Montevarchi in Italy.

Durow initially made the trip to Europe with plans to contest just two rounds of the MXGB British Championship with Chambers Racing. However, an extended stay has opened the door to an even bigger opportunity, with the talented South African now ready to line up against the world’s best in the premier class of Motocross.

While the MXGP stage will be new territory, Durow is no stranger to competing at a high level. The South African has previously tested himself in the fiercely competitive AMA Pro Motocross Championship, gaining valuable experience in the United States. Now, he will turn his attention to the World Championship, using this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix as a crucial stepping stone ahead of the historic return of MXGP to South Africa.

The opportunity is one that means a great deal to the South African, who admits racing in the World Championship has always been one of his biggest ambitions.

“To race an MXGP has always been a goal and dream of mine. With South Africa soon having an MXGP the timing is perfect for me to race the MXGP of Italy as preparation for the SA GP. The whole opportunity came about thanks to Chambers Racing, who have given me the chance to come over and race in the UK and some MXGP rounds”, Durow told GateDrop.com.

Lining up alongside the elite of the sport is something the South African is eagerly anticipating, particularly at an event expected to attract full gates across all classes.

“It will be my first MXGP, and I’m incredibly excited to line up against the best in the world. Especially this weekend, with full gates across all the classes, it’s going to be an insane event”.

Despite the excitement surrounding his debut, Durow is keeping his expectations realistic. Rather than focusing on results, his aim is to learn as much as possible from the experience and adapt to the unique demands of Grand Prix racing.

“I’m coming into this weekend with no expectations. I’m here to learn the format and improve every session. I know the MXGP class is incredibly stacked this year, so I just want to absorb the experience and learn as much as I can from everyone out on track”.

The Italian Grand Prix may only be the beginning of Durow’s World Championship adventure, with further appearances already being considered after he lines up at his home Grand Prix.

“I’m doing this round in Italy as preparation for the SA GP in two weeks’ time. We’re also looking at possibly racing the Loket GP and Lommel GP before the next British Championship round at Duns”, Durow concluded.

For Durow, Montevarchi represents far more than just another race. It is the fulfilment of a dream years in the making and an invaluable opportunity to prepare for what promises to be a landmark occasion when MXGP returns to South African soil.
