Jett Lawrence admitted his RedBud struggles were not helped by the long ruts that aggravated his foot and left him in pain at the end of the day.
The Aussie had an out of character day with a crash is qualifying, getting caught and passed by Hunter Lawrence in race one then two more crashes in moto two, but despite everything, Jett still made the podium.
Jett said in the press conference: “Normally I really like these conditions and I can ride them well and it’s not like how I don’t lose at this out of nowhere and I just struggle with my foot today and trying to like be balanced, especially with these ruts that this muddy sand just pulls you in and obviously I have all my weight on my left foot so then coming in it just really makes it more drastic instead of being even so I just struggle all my balance stuff like that and I gave my foot a good few flex and stuff like that so this rough day in the office but we’ll go back and get better and try and be a little bit better for Southwick. Asked if his foot hurt Jett confirmed, “After the race it was pretty stiff and sore, so yeah.”
“Normally I weight the rear quite a lot and I just like I’m struggling to do that with one leg right now and coming into braking is where I really need it to like hold that rear in and I can’t get my knees back and brake as well. It’s just a bit of a struggle on this my behalf. It’s difficult because I’m trying to work it out myself but also like the team’s obviously helping in trying to make the bike that will make it a little easy on me as well.
“I don’t need to prove anything. I mean it owes my record of wins so it’s not like I need to go out there and prove something to everyone. It’s just more so racing for myself and it’s just sucks right now because riding right now, I normally love riding and right now it’s been a pain in the butt with my foot you know? So it’s taken one of the things I love doing and it’s just a struggle”.
“Hunter that first one, he deserved that one, he caught me past me I was just kind of not having a really good flow and he had a bit of bad luck with getting la rock stuck in the chain which stalled the bike and then it’s just like, you’ll take it, but you obviously know deep down you can’t say like, yeah I won that first one and I just got gifted”.
On dealing with pain in the foot Jett said: “It’s hard with the mental because I’m doing stuff on the track and and I may have a good flow, but I always have in the back of my head, ‘imagine if I had another good ankle, I could be going so much faster and making it could be a lot easier,’ I’m just having to work twice as hard almost um but yeah like it’s uh every now and then yeah flex it gives it a good give it a good tweak and and a little quick yell out of pain but then we kind of try and get back into it.”
