Hunter and Darren Lawrence on Ken Roczen winning the Supercross title

It was a strange situation for the Lawrence family racing Ken Roczen after Ken’s parents had looked after them so well when they where in Europe forging their burgeoning careers.

And both Darren and Hunter still have so much respect for the family for everything they did for them.

Darren told us: “100% it was a bit of bitter sweet because of what Heiko and Steffi did for us in Europe. You want Heiko and Steffi and Kenny to get the win but then your own son is battling and you know so it was a shitty situation no matter what.

So it was whatever is gonna be is gonna be because, on one hand you don’t want your son to take that only opportunity that Ken had to win a championship because I know Heiko and Steffi have sacrificed so much themselves to Kenny, you know?  So it was a difficult one and same with all Manny and all the crew from Germany over being with Kenny for all his life and then they obviously supported us when we were there doing our thing so yeah it was a crappy situation, it’s like someone’s gonna,  lose someone’s gonna win so it is what it is.”

Hunter said:“There’s a lot of people were missing that I lived with his family, essentially, and all the friends that came from Germany to see him race and support him were also my friends and only friends at the time when I was in Europe as well! So it’s like we had the same kind of family/friends support group from different stages of our life careers, you know?

“It wasn’t envious towards him or wishing anything bad on him because the person inside of me can still be happy for Ken obviously his story. Just the race, like just disappointed, a little heartbroken that I didn’t  win but by no means am I not able to appreciate, you know what Ken’s done. He’s had an amazing career. It’s cool for him and I mean I will say it, I was happy. I feel like either outcome It was a win-lose, you know? I feel like we’re both really good guys and either one of us one someone would be happy and someone heartbroken at the same time.”
