SMX going global in the next five years?

In an in-depth interview with Lewis Phillips on VitalMX, Vice President of Supercross, Dave Prater, has reasserted his intention to take SMX outside the USA. In line with America’s mainstream sports like NBA, NFL and baseball, who are all taking their games global, SMX is ready to do the same in the near future – but the logistics still have to be worked out.

For fans outside the US it would certainly be a game changer to have the opportunity to see their AMA heroes in person outside of an expensive trip to the USA or at the MXoN and it would bring the SMX to a new in person audience and a wide ranging global network of motorsports fans, something like SMX on a Saturday night of an F1 event? The potential is huge!

Dave Prater told Lewis: “I will be disappointed if we haven’t gone international within the next four years. That’s always been our goal, I don’t know if we talked about last time. In 2002 to 2004 we were in Geneva, Arnhem and Sevilla, Spain. Great events, loved it. It was awesome, but it was supercross then only so yeah, we’re looking at taking things international at some point.

Obviously it’s super expensive to travel everyone in the sport overseas. The teams, as we talked about before, the OEMs that race SMX, their budgets are domestic budgets, so they focus on the United States. So that’s a challenge. But as the sport grows overall, not only SMX, but MXGP and just around the world. I think there’s opportunity there for sure, so that will be the plan.”
