2024 MX2 World Championship Preview: The Statistics – a new era!

Ahead of the 2024 MX2 World Championship season getting underway this weekend, we’ve had a look at some of the underlying stats with the current crop of MX2 GP riders and it is quite clear that we are entering a new era of talent in MX2.

With Jago Geerts moving up to MXGP, despite the Belgian not winning an MX2 GP world title he won 24 GP’s. Heading into the 2024 season, none of the riders have won more than three GP overalls!

Going into 2024, there’s three riders that have won three MX2 GP overalls – Benistant, Everts and Längenfelder. After those three there’s actually only three other MX2 GP winners in the class (a total of six) – one of which the reigning world champion – Andrea Adamo.

Adamo has two GP overall wins but has an MX2 world title to his crown so it shows how consistent he is although there will be another argument he’ll have to start winning more to win another world title.

Kay de Wolf has a lot of talent and moved up to the MX2 World Championship in 2021 at 16 years old. So far, he only has 1 GP overall win but there’s no doubt he’ll want to add to that tally in 2024 and challenge for the title. His younger team mate, Lucas Coenen was able to win one GP overall in his rookie season but will also surely add to that in 2024.

GP overall wins:

Rider Overall wins
Thibault Benistant 3
Liam Everts 3
Simon Längenfelder 3
Andrea Adamo 2
Lucas Coenen 1
Kay de Wolf 1

When it comes to race wins, Längenfelder has the most in the class, the young German usually wins in style by going 1-1 but ten race wins could also amount to more than his GP overall wins. Out of the MX2 race winners, Everts has the least at 1 but has as many overall wins as anyone else going into the 2024 season.

Another interesting point is that Coenen actually has more race wins (5) than he does podiums (3) – the young Belgian had a few unlucky DNF’s when it looked like he’d at least get on the box so will be looking to rectify that this year.

Race wins:

Rider Race wins
Simon Längenfelder 10
Thibault Benistant 8
Lucas Coenen 5
Kay de Wolf 5
Andrea Adamo 4
Liam Everts 1

Again at the top of the podium count is Längenfelder with 14 podiums edging out the talented, Benistant and despite only winning 1 GP, de Wolf has had thirteen visits to the podium – 1 more than Adamo who clinched the title last year.

Mikkel Haarup is the only rider that hasn’t won an MX2 GP overall but has stood on the box and he has five MX2 podium visits. It is a big year for the Dane as it’s his final year in the class and with new brand, Triumph. Not only will he want to add to his podium visits but he’ll want to stand on that top step.

Out of the current MX2 GP field only seven actually have the experience of standing on the MX2 podium so there should be plenty more names to get added to the list in 2024. Of course plenty of riders have experienced the podium in EMX so will now be looking to do the same in MX2.
