Interview: Max Werner – from racing in India to Hawkstone International

Even though it’s the off season which usually means less travelling, it has been the opposite for Max Werner as he’s recently been in India racing the Supercross series over there. The young German then made his debut with JM Honda at Hawkstone International and had a strong day in the sand for his first MX race with his new team.

We caught up with Werner after Hawkstone International which you can read or watch below:

GateDrop: Max, we are here at Hawkstone International today but you were racing in India a few weeks ago. You are all around the world at the moment!

Werner: Yeah, I’ve had stressful weeks the past few weeks. Now I am here at Hawkstone and I actually feel really good on the bike. I think the Honda is perfect, we have a good setup and I am happy to be here.

GateDrop: It was your first race with JM Honda, first MX race on a 250 here at Hawkstone Park and you looked really good out there. Did you maybe even surprise yourself a bit?

Werner: We had a good winter I would say, we had a good preparation. My goal was to be top five today and I did it with a fourth overall. I am happy about that.

GateDrop: What are your goals for your rookie EMX250 championship? I think today you showed that you suit the bike…

Werner: I think we will still work on it because we are not 100% there yet but we want to be. I think top ten and maybe some top five in the EMX250 class is possible.

GateDrop: Racing two rounds of the Indian Supercross series, what was it like racing over there and Supercross? Something very different to what you are used to!

Werner: True. I got an offer from them and I have to say, I couldn’t say no. I went over there racing on a stock bike, stock suspension and everything stock. It was actually quite fun also the new experience. I enjoyed it there and the last race I finished third, it was good.

GateDrop: The JM Honda team, you must be delighted to join them, Jacky Martens has helped develop a lot of talent over the years…

Werner: True, he picked me up when I had nothing. We directly started with testing the bike, making the perfect setup for me. I can live with him, I can train with the best guys. Also to have Hakon (Osterhagen) as a team mate to help push me, it is perfect. I couldn’t be happier.
