Guillem Farres: “I’m going to fight for this championship”

A first Grand Prix victory is always a milestone moment in a rider’s career and for Guillem Farres, that breakthrough finally arrived at the French Grand Prix at the demanding Lacapelle-Marival circuit. The Spaniard looked comfortable on the technical layout from the very first session and carried that speed throughout the entire weekend.

After showing impressive pace in every outing, Farres delivered when it mattered most on Sunday by going 1-1 in the motos to secure his maiden GP overall victory in emphatic fashion. The second race proved especially memorable as he went bar-to-bar with teammate Camden McLellan in a tense battle for the win, eventually holding firm under pressure to complete the perfect day.

The victory was clearly a big one for Farres, who admitted the doubters had provided extra motivation during the break in the championship.

“We showed that we had the speed this weekend. I led laps in every single moto. We had a great time with the team during the break. I’m really excited to come back racing and I had some time to think about some things in the break. I get bored living alone in Belgium by myself, so I’ve been listening to some podcasts. It’s kind of funny, because probably people that never rode a bike before, they’ve been talking a lot. They always talk about me and my teammate not being contenders and that really made me a little bit mad, but in a good way. I just want to come back here, do my thing, and show them that they’re wrong. I think me and my teammate, we proved we won moto’s this year and we had some problems – I had a DNF in Almonte but we’re right back there. The last two rounds, I cut a lot of points to the leaders. I’m happy and we just have to keep going that way, and we’ll be fine”.

Farres has steadily been building momentum in recent rounds and the confidence from this latest performance was clear to see. The Spaniard believes he belongs at the very front of the MX2 field and made it known that he fully intends to stay in the title fight until the very end of the season.

“Yeah, that’s where I belong. I’m going to fight for this championship until the last moto. I’m fighting for the championship every lap. We’ve only had six rounds, and it’s a long championship. A lot of things can happen. A lot of things happened to me in the first race and it’s racing, you know. Some days you have a good day, some days you have a bad day. I think I have showed that I belong on the podium on the top step with everyone else. That’s what I’m here for”.

With the championship still in its early stages, Farres now finds himself third in the standings and just twenty points away from the red plate. More importantly, he looks like a rider full of confidence and belief. If his current form continues, the Spaniard could become a very serious threat in the MX2 title race over the coming months.
