Talking point: Should Tim Gajser get a home GP in Slovenia?

Five-time world champion Tim Gajser is one of the biggest names in Motocross, but there’s something surprisingly missing from his glittering career — a true home Grand Prix. While Arco di Trento in Italy is the closest thing he has to one, with its proximity to Slovenia and a loyal fanbase that turns up in big numbers every year, it still isn’t quite the same as racing on home soil.

The atmosphere at Arco is always electric, with passionate Gajser fans creating a buzz around the circuit. It’s a special GP for the Slovenian, but imagine what it could be like if a round of the MXGP World Championship actually took place in Slovenia. It would not only be a proud moment for Gajser and his country but could also draw a massive crowd and a great atmosphere.

Gajser himself has expressed his desire for a home GP, though he’s well aware of the challenges.

“I would love to have a home GP, but, yeah, I mean, there was some talk, you know, in the past couple of years. Hopefully, you know, I’m not getting younger as well, so hopefully they can manage to do a Slovenian GP, when I’m still in a good shape, you know, that I’m able to win the races.”

The idea has floated around for some time, but making it a reality would require some serious effort. Slovenia currently lacks a facility that meets the requirements for a GP, meaning a new track would likely need to be built from scratch — something that’s been done successfully in other countries.

“They would need to do it like they have at other places and build a track. We don’t have a track that would have enough space, you look at the paddock, the public, you know all these things… yeah I just hope that it’s going to happen before I finish my career”, Gajser told GateDrop.com.

Despite not pushing too hard for it himself, Gajser acknowledges just how special it would be to race at home.

“I mean, I’m not really putting a lot of pressure, let’s see what the years can bring, but, obviously, like every GP rider, when you are on the top, when you are winning the races, you’d like to have a home GP.”

With Gajser still at the top of his game and one of the sport’s stars, now could be the perfect time to bring a GP to Slovenia. It would be a landmark moment for Slovenian motocross and a fitting tribute to one of the country’s greatest sporting heroes.

A home GP for Tim Gajser wouldn’t just be a dream come true for him — it would be a celebration for an entire nation. Let’s hope the powers that be can make it happen before one of the sport’s finest hangs up his helmet.
