Kay de Wolf endured a challenging weekend at the MXGP of Germany after hurting his ankle in Ernee the week before but still managed to salvage a podium result, keeping himself in contention for the MX2 World Championship. The Dutchman battled through injury and tricky conditions, showing grit and determination as the series hit the halfway point.

“Yeah, last weekend (in Ernée) was a tough one. I hit my ankle pretty bad in time practice. So, from there on it just went bad to worse actually. Was in the wrong spot every single moto but it can happen, no big disaster in the end. I think I’m 30 points off from Andrea and those guys. It is what it is, but we still have ten races to go. We’re only halfway so still a lot of points will be served. I think I will be in a good spot and hopefully again next week.”

Despite the injury, de Wolf praised his setup and credited his persistence for turning a difficult weekend into a positive outcome.

“No, the bike is really good, I feel really comfortable on my bike. I showed that in time practice. But yeah, I made a small mistake in qualifying race and this ground is not really forgiving. As soon as you hit it, you’re pretty much stuck and my ribs definitely felt that. So did my shoulder. We kept fighting all weekend and we put it on the box, it almost felt like a win. Because it didn’t look that good this morning when I woke up. I kept fighting and it paid off. So, I think that today kept me in the championship, let’s keep it that way.”

The ankle issue, which troubled de Wolf before the start of the series, remains a small concern, but he’s hopeful a week of rest will allow him to bounce back for the next round in Latvia.

“Yeah, it was the same ankle as I hurt before Hawkstone (International). I hit it this time in a different spot than I did last time. Last time was more my fault, I would say. It was also a bit unlucky, but the ankle is a weak point in my body, let’s say. It just needs a little touch and it’s getting pretty swollen. So that’s the biggest problem, what I’m having right now. Hopefully we will be fully back next weekend for the sand race (at Kegums). I will have a week recovery, and we want to be back on the box next weekend.”

With the championship battle heating up, de Wolf’s resilience and consistency could prove key as the series heads into a crucial stretch. His performance in Germany, despite the setbacks turned into a positive weekend for the reigning MX2 World Champion.
