De Wolf on his future – MXGP or USA?

The talented kid has become the man in MX2 as Kay de Wolf has shown incredible form, speed and poise in 2024 during the MX2 World Championship. Coming from injury last year just when he took the red plate, the teenage Dutch stylist has been unruffled mentally all year long with the red plate in hand. Whether he wins or loses and even if he crashes, he always makes the best of a bad situation and doesn’t get carried away with a win.

His ride in Loket and Lommel summed De Wolf up this season. After a scary crash in the qualifying race at Loket, De Wolf ended up winning the overall with a classy ride in moto two on Sunday to hold off a flying Lucas Coenen and pass Simon Laengenfelder for the overall win – under pressure De Wolf produced.

It was similar in Lommel, he passed title rival and teammate, Lucas Coenen, both motos on lap one and found his way to the lead immediately, crashed and still won race one! De Wolf then crashed again in race two but still did what he had to do in race two to take the overall win. Now he has a 65 point lead with six GP’s left and De Wolf is closer than he ever has been to realising a childhood dream of being world champion.

But what does the future hold for one of the most talented and exciting riders to watch on the planet? De Wolf isn’t sure yet, but he has already shown speed on a 450 in the beach races and he says it will be his choice, and, like a lot of young riders American supercross is very much on his radar!

“I really don’t know at the moment,” said De Wolf when we asked him at Lommel. “For sure I am staying for another year here in Europe, maybe even longer but I don’t know what I will be doing. It can go both ways, it is up to me and what I want to do. I enjoy riding the 450, I ride it during the week sometimes but to race that thing is different! We will see what we will end up doing but I really enjoy the 250 for the moment and hopefully we can keep that going for a few years.”

On the allure of America, De Wolf said:

“I don’t know. I just want to experience riding supercross. I did a few supercross races when I was young on the 85, some Dutch supercross races. I just want to experience it on a 250, on a four-stroke let’s say. Maybe we can do it anytime soon and then we will see what we end up doing.”

MXGP creates amazing riders but more and more want to go and experience the American dream with supercross, motocross and now SMX creating a glamourous, alluring package. It’s a trifecta of disciplines that GP riders now believe they can succeed at after seeing the Lawrence brothers, Ferrandis and Vialle all take titles in recent years without much supercross experience.

Jorge Prado is next in line to move, and the Coenen’s have the long-term goal to be there and have the same agent as the Lawrence boys, Lucas Mirtl. And now De Wolf, another huge star in MXGP, is considering the US option and there is no doubt he could also succeed there with his skillset just as much as he could on a 450 in MXGP.

Whatever he chooses, Kay will be a must watch in either series for fans across the world and American’s would surely embrace such an effervescent riding style and talent like de Wolf, he could be a real star Stateside!

The world is Kay de Wolf’s oyster right now.
