Jeffrey Herlings has taken back the red plate for the first time since winning the opening round in Argentina, with the perfect weekend in Loket that saw the Dutch supertalent go 1-1-1 across the weekend and head to Lommel with a 49 points lead over the injured Lucas Coenen.
The Belgian teenager didn’t race today due to the injury from his Foxhill crash that has left him with sciatic pain on his left hip and leg that forced him out of the qualifying race yesterday after only a few laps.
Herlings said: “Man, it was an awesome weekend. To go fastest in each practice, timed practice and warm-up and almost let every single except for maybe three or four laps. Coming home with 60 points is amazing, we have six rounds to go, for the championship this was something special.
“I don’t want to repeat myself but it’s not the way I want to do it (with Coenen injured) 49 points in front is crazy, eight days ago we were minus 68 – pretty insane! We keep charging, six more to go and try to keep being focused. Looking forward to Lommel, kind of a home GP along with Arnhem, so a couple of sand GPs, really excited for that.”
It seems that Coenen will try and race Lommel next week in what could be his last home Grand Prix if he goes to the USA in 2027 and it could be his last throw of the dice to stop Jeffrey Herlings winning a sixth world title barring injury of his own.
