British riders discuss team GB MXoN selection – Refreshing comments from Searle

The guys at Ignite Moto spoke to some British riders at Hawkstone Park at the weekend to get their thoughts on who should get selected for team GB at this years MXoN. It’s a big one for team GB this year as it’s a home Nations taking place at Matterley Basin which is always special.

The general consensus between the riders is that Conrad Mewse and Max Anstie are the obvious choices for MXGP and MX2. The third slot will be a tough decision between the likes of Josh Gilbert, Adam Sterry, Bobby Bruce or even Tommy Searle.

Tommy Searle in particular was very honest, he is just after winning the MX2 class at Hawkstone Park and is hitting form at the right time after a tough start to the season – he could also be an option on the 450cc. Searle, however, would rather one of the younger riders get the opportunity to represent their country as he’s been there and done that. Very refreshing comments…

“I actually sent Mark (Chamberlain) a message the other day saying, I want a race and then he said, did you really want a race? And I said no. Then he messaged me yesterday to say, who do I think the team should be? And I said it should be Max, Conrad and then either Josh (Gilbert) or Bobby (Bruce). Just my opinion at the minute”.

“If Max rides a 250, Conrad 450, and then either one of those two at the minute for the second 450 spot. That can change, but I think for now, that’s a great team or the best team we’ve got. I could always step up and race, but I feel I’m at a point now in my career where I’m quite happy with where I’m at”.

“I don’t feel that I’ve got it in me to go race at the top of them classes. So, for me to just fill in and almost take a ride from one of the younger people coming up through, I’d rather almost give them the chance, because I feel they’ve earned it, and I’ve been there and done it myself, so they can go race it. It might not be the year that we can go win, but you never know at that race”.

“A podium’s still possible. I just don’t think I’m in a place now where I can jump up and run with the top guys, so even though maybe I can get a half-sensible result, it’s not really a race”.
