The future of Lommel MX track is in danger

There has been so much Motocross talent to come out of Belgium over the years and currently we have Jago Geerts, Liam Everts and the Coenen twins in the paddock all from Belgium – there could certainly be at least one future world Motocross champion there as they’re all very talented.

At the moment, Lommel is the centre of the sport in Europe with many GP teams based in Lommel and use the track which is one of the toughest – if not the toughest in the world, to prepare for the World Championships and WMX action. There is no better place to learn than Lommel with the huge bumps and tough conditions.

The tracks chairman Jaak Vanvelthoven, has revealed that the future of the track is in danger due to permit/noise issues.

He told, hbvl.be, “If the permit is not temporarily relaxed, our course will close from January 1”.

The MXGP of Lommel is scheduled for the 27th and 28th of July and is always one of the best GP’s on the calendar but Boonen has stated they could still apply for a permit to run the GP.

The MXGP of Lommel, is still on the World Championship calendar until 2026. “In principle, that’s not a problem,” says GP organizer Johan Boonen. “You can apply for a separate permit for a race. But Lommel is more than just that Grand Prix. Lommel is the centre of motocross in Europe. It has to stay that way. The constructors are working hard to limit the noise. So please give us another year or two”.

If Lommel was ever to be removed from the GP calendar, have Belgium got any other tracks that would have the facilities to host an MXGP? With so many tracks closing in Belgium over the years there’s less and less so the future would certainly be worrying.

Fingers crossed the permit issue can be resolved and Lommel is here for the future and here to stay as a GP track and practice track giving riders all over the world somewhere to ride.
