Report: Latvia MXGP – Gajser dominates as Jonass stars on home soil!

Tim Gajser’s perfect weekend in Latvia was in contrast to Jorge Prado’s nightmare day that leaves Gajser, only six rounds in, already with the ability to miss a round and still lead the championship with the Slovenian a class above so far this season.

Ironically, this was probably Prado’s best performance all year. Prado won the qualifying race and then led the majority of race one, but then Gajser attacked quickly as soon as he got into second passing Jonass and that seemed to shock Prado who said Tim came out of nowhere! Prado regrouped and, for the first time all year, rode with a lot of aggression and purpose to stay with the Honda rider.

This was the pace Prado had been searching for this season and, with a lap to go, he gave it one more push to close in on Gajser but with a turn to go Prado jumped long, going right to left, and Gajser, who scrubbed, went left to right, unfortunately resulting in Prado landing into the side of Gajser’s bike. Prado went down hard as Gajser somehow stayed on to win and massively increased his points lead with Prado picking himself up for 12th.

It got worse in race two for Prado as he started sixth and then went down a couple of laps in, finally finshing 13th as Gajser hunted down home hero and race leader, a rapid Pauls Jonass, who rode fantastic all weekend but couldn’t quite hold off the Slovenian for the GP win with the HRC Honda man making his move to go 1-1 and dominate the GP.

Jonass, in a superb performance, took second overall to the delight of the raptorous home crowd with Ruben Fernandez having a strong but calm performance to take his first podium of the year in MXGP and great day for the red riders.

But even Tim Gajser must be missing Jeffrey Herlings, Romain Febvre and Antonio Cairoli right now in MXGP to provide some sort of sustained challenge especially with Prado having his issues in Latvia, culminating in a 66 point lead for Gajser after only six rounds!

Glenn Coldenhoff took fourth overall and grabbed third in race two with a pass on Fernandez at the finish line as he continued his return to consistently good form. Maxime Renaux didn’t have great starts but rode well for fifth overall with Forato impressing again in sixth.

Jago Geerts responded in style to a difficult GP in Arco to win both MX2 motos at Kegums and he is now tied with Tom Vialle at the top of the world championship – and took the red plate having won the most GPs!

“I stayed out of trouble not like last week, I am just really happy with my riding and my speed,” said a very happy Geerts, who showed again the new mental fortitude he ahs found this season.

Vialle had a below par fifth after a crash in race one when a braking bump caught him out and then had a blistering last lap battle with Kay de Wolf for second in race two with the dutchman passing Vialle back for second with just a couple of turns to go in an aggressive bar-to-bar duel.

What a day it was for Kevin Horgmo. The Norwegian was the one man who was on the pace of Jago Geerts this weekend and he kept Geerts honest in race one to take second before leading over half the race in moto two with Geerts slowly but surely reeling him in as the race progressed. Then, just when it looked like Horgmo had secured second, he hit the bales coming onto the start straight and went down! Fortunately Horgmo got up in fourth and still took a well desereved second overall and superb weekend for the grinning and disbelieving F&H Kawasaki rider.

Kay de Wolf took fourth overall thanks to that strong ride in race two and coming from the back in race one with Thibault Benistant fast again in fifth.
