Jett Lawrence issues apology for leaked video comments and talks about his comeback for outdoors

Jett Lawrence has an open mind ahead of his return to racing at Pala tomorrow, admitting it could go either way as he adjusts to the pace and sees where his fitness is in a return to his ACL injury, but he revealed he has had more time on the bike going into Pala than he did ahead of SMX last year after his thumb injury.

But before he talked about his return, he did issue an apology for comments and words used in a video leaked by former agent Lucas Mirtl this week, when Jett was in his teenage years. “First of all I want to say I am deeply sorry for any hurt I have caused,” said an honest, remorseful and candid Lawrence. “Yeah, it has been a tough year and, yeah, I want to take full accountability for inappropriate language. I have used inappropriate language in casual conversations with friends and that is not acceptable. I can’t hide behind the immaturity anymore, I need to work on becoming a better person, I just really hope everyone can accept my apology. As most of you know I am going through a legal matter right now and I am going to leave that up to the lawyers to deal with.

“I just want to take this time to apologise to the sport for the distraction we have caused. We are approaching likely the greatest motocross season in recent memory and I am super excited to be on the bike and be able to race. There is going to be some great battles, as you said we have a lot of big names and great racers. Obviously Jorge in Europe, I don’t think I have really gotten to race him yet bar Nations, obviously Eli is back as well and Chase defending last year’s championship and many more name. I am super excited to be back here racing.”

Lawrence also spoke on the comparison to coming back after his thumb injury to SMX last year to coming back from his ACL this year. “This year I have a lot more time to get prepped for outdoors thankfully. I had a lot more weeks to get prepped thanks to Dr doing a really good job on my knee and spending it felt like half of the year at Doc Gs place. I was able to get on the bike pretty early and start riding. Technically, I had more time on the bike but getting an ACL surgery is a lot different than just a thumb surgery“.

We will see, it is still not back to it’s full size like the other leg, so we are still working on getting more muscle, my leg is small enough! We are looking forward to tomorrow, we will just see where we stand. Like SMX, I didn’t know where I was going to be and take it how it is once the gate drops, just figure out where I stand, how my fitness is and what the pace is and go off that. You can’t really judge, because it is so unknown.

We could go and set the world on fire or we could go there and not make top ten – hopefully we make top ten, it is just going to take time, I haven’t raced in a while so getting the race nerves and race craft back again, it’s going to take time, you don’t just get it back straight away, so we will see.”
