Young Irish rider, Lennox Dickinson long been a top talent creating waves in Ireland but now he is trying to make his mark in the Adult British championship.
After a learning year last year on the Oakleaf Honda that saw him show flashes of that speed he has, the Irish teenage talent is doing his own thing for 2025 and going full privateer on a Triumph as he continues to aspire to make his mark on the sport.
Stephen Megarry caught up with Lennox while he was practicing at Magilligan. Watch or read below:
Lennox, we’re out here spinning a few laps at Magilligan. Track’s absolutely awesome, Phil’s done a brilliant job. Some really good technical sections out there, big, big jumps. I have to say you’re absolutely trucking. You’re on a sighting lap and it was probably as fast as what I go! So you’re absolutely flying out there.
Thank you very much.
How’s your off-season been going and how’s the switch to Triumph for you?
Yeah it’s going very good at the minute and training hard, never stopped training the gym and stuff. Yeah I feel good on the Triumph, it’s definitely a lot better than the Honda, it’s just a lot quicker and the suspension is better and stuff, just a better bike in general. I’m starting to feel like what I used to on the bike, so yeah.
And what sort of stuff are you working on today? I’ve seen there you were doing a few sprint laps.
Yeah I’m doing sprint laps and then slow laps, just to build foundation. Yeah, starting to feel good.
And are you working with a trainer this year or anything?
No, I just bike, bike wise I don’t train with anyone, I just train with me and dad just together and fitness wise I got a new coach recently and it seem to work, so yeah, feel good.
And who are you riding for this year and what are your plans race-wise?
I’m not riding for anyone this year , ust because of the budget and even just to get to British it’s very dear, so keeping things to a minimum and yeah, I’m going to do British.
What about any EMX rounds or anything, is there anything, if you got a wee wild card would you do any of that?
Again it’s just the budget, just the budget to get over the books. Definitely if there was one back in Matterley I would love to do it, just to see where my pace is at.
And going back to last year, talk us through it, were you happy with what you accomplished?
The goal was to just finish every race and I did finish, I didn’t only finish one race because I had a broken hand. But every race I did I finished and I was strong top 20 but I’d love to have more maybe top 15 results, hopefully have better results this year, I definitely will have better results this year.
It’s always encouraging to see young talent from Northern Ireland making strides, what do you feel that you need to do to get to the next level?
Just keep racing and riding with the top riders. I have to build my confidence a wee bit over in England because it is a lot of pressure compared to over here. So yeah, just keep training really.
How have you found the level of the British Championship?
The level of the British, it’s probably the highest it’s ever been, Tommy Searle, Dylan Walsh in the 250 class, so yeah it’s definitely the most stacked it’s ever been probably…
And what’s it like lining up against Tommy?
I don’t really care, to be honest it is just riders, but just another person, so try to just ignore that and try and ride my own race
And last question, I see a lot of the top riders posting about their off the bike training, what’s your fitness program look like?
Yeah pretty much at the minute because I’ve just started with a new trainer, I’m still figuring things out but yeah I can already notice the difference on the bike.
Is it mainly running or cycling or what sort of stuff are you doing?
At the minute I’m doing weights then a bit of cardio as well, just building that foundation as well, feeling good.
And anybody you want to thank or anybody you want to mention?
Moto 33, 123MX and Darren McFarlane at BDMCC. Thank you very much
Alright, thanks very much and best of luck.
