Confirmed: RJ Hampshire and Malcolm Stewart become free agents for 2027

The recent announcement from Husqvarna that it will no longer operate a full factory AMA Supercross team beyond the 2026 season has already created major movement in the rider market. While the brand will remain involved in racing through satellite support and factory-backed engines, the decision means uncertainty for some of the current Husqvarna riders.

Among those affected are RJ Hampshire and Malcolm Stewart, who have both publicly confirmed they are now searching for opportunities for the 2027 season.

Despite previously appearing settled within the Husqvarna structure, both riders took to social media following the announcement to acknowledge that their futures are now unclear.

Hampshire admitted the situation was difficult to accept but made it clear he remains focused on the remainder of the current season:

“Business is business… doesn’t make it suck any less. Still grateful, more motivated, and ready to give everything I’ve got this summer. Next year is unknown but hopeful to land something soon”.

Stewart also addressed the news and revealed that even having a deal in place through 2027 was not enough to avoid the changes brought by Husqvarna’s restructuring:

“I know everyone’s already seen the news by now. Not exactly how I thought things would go after being locked in through ’27, but that’s the business. I’ve been through this before, so you learn to keep it moving. Looking forward to seeing the fans in Salt Lake”.

The news is expected to have a significant impact on the 2027 silly season, with both Hampshire and Stewart becoming attractive options for teams looking to strengthen their 450cc line-ups.

While there is always the possibility of a late change of direction within the KTM Group, current indications suggest the pair will need to secure new homes for 2027. Their next moves will certainly be among the biggest storylines to follow over the coming months.
