After suffering a horrific crash at a Dutch pre-season race in Oss earlier this year that almost cost him his life, Ivano van Erp has now confirmed that he will step away from motocross and bring his racing career to an end. The two-time Junior World Champion has endured a difficult period of recovery and reflection following the incident, ultimately making the heartbreaking decision to put his health and future first. Despite the disappointment of having to walk away from the sport, van Erp can look back on a career filled with success, including two World Championship titles and numerous EMX podiums.
Van Erp posted the following update on social media:
“Hi guys, it’s been a bit quiet lately. As most of you will know I had a bad crash earlier this year at a Dutch Pre Season Race in Oss 🇳🇱, which almost cost my life… It has been a tough time with a lot of thinking what I wanted to do”.
“But the decision is made… with pain in my heart but the best for my body & health but specially for the people / friends / family / sponsors and everyone else around me..
I will step back from racing dirtbikes and put an end on my career… ”
“It’s just too dangerous with the situation my body is in now and I realize there’s more in life than motocross only… looking back on a career im proud of , with some bright highs, ( 2 time World Champion and a lot of EMX podiums), but also the lowest lows with all my injuries I’ve been through”.
“I want to thank everyone involved in my career!! People who supported me / helped me, and sponsored me through the years, all this wouldn’t be possible without you guys.
Thank you guys”.
“Rob, you were so much more than a supporter; you were my best friend and a huge part of my motocross journey. Thank you for always believing in me and standing by my side. It breaks my heart that you’re no longer here. You’ll forever be part of my story, and I’ll carry you with me for the rest of my life. I’m going to miss you more than words can say, my friend”.
