We heard at the time Jeffrey Herlings was going a lot quicker than Villopoto even on a 250 at Lommel in practice days but this is what the guy who has won more outdoorrs races than anyone on the planet remembers of Villopoto starting out in the Lommel sand: “I saw him riding at Lommel, I even said to my mechanic, is that Villopoto on track or is that his mechanic on track? I don’t know what he was doing, but he was not fast, man!”

Villopoto of course never got to race at Lommel for a GP after his injury in Arco, but it would have been interesting to see how close or far away he would have been to Cairoli after a few months practicing in the deep sand. But it is certainly interesting to hear from Herlings how far off a legend like Villopoto was initially the sand, Lommel is a different world from AMA racing!
