Race report: Turkish MXGP – Everts closes in on Adamo as Gajser wins first GP of the year!

Tim Gajser took his first GP win of the season as all the hard work coming back from a painful broken femur was justified. But even then Gajser still endured another crash on his way to victory!

Gajser led race one until Romain Febvre came firing past at the halfway mark and Tim settled for second but race two was different as Gajser took the holeshot from Renaux and Febvre but didn’t let either Frenchman catch him this time, pulling away to an eight second lead – until Gajser cased a jump and went down! Gajser got up and still led the race but Renaux was on his back wheel and, for a frantic two laps, Gajser fought to stay out front and then started pulling away again to secure his first win in 12 months!

Gajser said: “I was feeling great all weekend. Today first moto, I got big arm pump and didn’t want to risk. Second race I took a really good start and made a comfortable lead then made a mistake on my own. I manged to recovery immediately and hold onto the win. It was a difficult time (with the injury) but I am glad we are back.

Maxime Renaux showed David Vuillemin just why he is worthy of the French MXoN selection coming from outside the top 10 to third in race one and taking second in race two, staying ahead of Romain Febvre all moto long.

But what of Prado? It was the worst GP of the year for the Spaniard who actually holeshot both races but only finished 10th overall! And, amazingly the problems came early on, straight after the start in both motos! Race one Prado fell but then the Gas Gas took a while restarting and he was dead last before coming through to 13th. Then, somehow, someway, it happened again! Prado again had the holeshot in race two, but in the exact same turn he fell in moto one, the bike the bike suddenly stalled without Prado crashing and he got restarted dead last once again! This time coming up to ninth but his championship lead is slashed from over 92 points to 67 with two races to go.

Liam Everts took the MX2 GP win in Turkey but lost three valuable points when he crashed while leading race two with five minutes to go as championship leader, Andrea Adamo, had a rough weekend!

Everts 2-3 was still good enough for the GP victory on the slick, rutted and edgy track as Adamo, after a 12th in the qualifying race, took tenth in race one after a crash as it looked like the championship npressure was getting to him! But Adamo rode really well in race two, limiting the damage after a bad start to pass moto one winner Laegenfelder for fifth and close right up on Geerts and Van de Moosdijk, even setting some of the fastest laps of the race but couldn’t make the pass. He now heads to Maggiora with a 48 points lead after coming in with over 70, the Italian still has the chance to wrap up the championship at home but Liam is making Adamo earn this title and it looks like it could go to the final round at Matterley Basin.

Grand Prix winner Everts said: “A little mistake there. That line I had was super fast but it came with it’s risks and I paid the price for it. Two wins in a row, three GP wins (this season), I have goosebumps. I’m going to keep pushing, it’s not over yet! We will see where we end up, try and keep improving these last two rounds.”

The man who benefitted also from Everts crash was Kevin Horgmo who took the lead back having kept the pressure on Everts and it paid off with Horgmo taking his first moto win in what is a really strong end to the season for the Norwegian, and F&H Kawasaki, who said: “Finally things have turned around, I felt things could have come sooner but finally. We worked so hard for this.”
