On Friday it was announced that Kay de Wolf will stay with Neestan Husqvarna in MXGP for the next couple years, ending the speculation that Kay would end up in America like Jorge Prado and the Coenen brothers, at least in the next couple of years!
During out interview after his podium at Lommel, Kay explained his decision to stay in Europe for the time being and chase that MXGP world title.
You’ve announced you’re staying with Nestaan Husqvarna now for the next couple of years. I spoke to Mitch Payton in an interview at Hangtown and he mentioned that he was still interested in signing you. So obviously there was options for you to go to America. You proved you can ride Supercross. What was the decision to stay in MXGP?
Yeah, I mean, I think I should be one of the guys in the coming years. So I wanted to stay in Europe and get at least one MXGP world title or a few, let’s say, at least one or a few. And that’s my goal for the next two years and then we will see where my career end up if we’re still going to go to the US or we stay in here because I’m only 21. So I could still make the move in three years.
So I’m just here to go for my MXGP career first. And then we’ll see what happen in the future. But I’m really happy to be staying with this team. It’s a special, special thing, actually, for being so long with this team and it feels like a family. So operating with this team is pretty easy. I’m looking forward for the next few years.
Yeah, I was going to say it feels like a family even with them so long with the same genuine care about you. As a person, not just as a rider, how much does that help your performance and just be at ease within the team that cares about the person as well?
Yeah, like I’ve said before, this team is kind of, I wouldn’t say built around me, but I’ve jumped in this team right from the beginning. So everyone who is there, knowing them from the first day. So it’s pretty easy going and it feels it feels normal. You never see someone new and it always feels like home when I walk into the workshop.
And it’s pretty crazy to see when you have people over like a few weeks ago, there was some British over, they came to see the workshop. And when you see those kids, how amazed they are with the workshop, it reminds you actually that this is my kid dream as well. So for me, it feels pretty normal walking into the workshop. It’s like walking into my own kitchen and it’s the same place, it becomes normal and pretty natural because it’s so causal for me. It’s only 15 to 20 minute drive for me. So I can go to every day and I can walk in whenever I want. And so it feels pretty normal to be there.
And when you see those kids then looking around and seeing all those bikes, it’s it’s an amazing moment actually, because it reminds me of when I was a kid that I, 10 years ago, I was supporting Jeffrey around here.
