Interview: Kevin Horgmo – “I just need somebody to take me on board and get me that small step even higher”

Kevin Horgmo’s 2026 MXGP season took an unfortunate turn in China, with the Norwegian forced to cut his weekend short after suffering a fractured scaphoid. With his future for next season still uncertain, the injury comes at a particularly frustrating time as he looks to secure a ride for 2027 – his season is now over as he also won’t make the MXoN.

Horgmo has been working hard to deliver consistent results throughout the latter stages of the championship, but a lack of standout performances, partly due to difficult starts, has made his search for a ride more challenging. Despite that, the SR Honda rider remains confident in his ability and believes his recent form has demonstrated the qualities he could bring to a team.

Speaking to Ed Heather from Cult Moto, Horgmo discussed the injury, his current situation without a confirmed ride for next year and why he remains confident about finding a place on the grid for 2027.

Horgmo explains the injury and the importance of finishing the season strongly

Horgmo had started the weekend feeling positive but suffered a crash in free practice after hitting an advertising board. Although the initial incident was not particularly serious, pain in his wrist quickly became a concern, and further checks confirmed a scaphoid fracture.

With his future still unresolved, the injury was especially disappointing given his desire to finish the season on a high and put himself in the best possible position when speaking to teams.

“Not the best weekend. I started off feeling really good in free practice, but just wanted to put in one more lap and went on the edge of the track, I hit one of those advertisement boards and crashed, not anything big. Even then I went to the pit lane, got the mechanics to straighten everything out. I went for another lap, everything felt okay, but then I came back to the pits, and the wrist was not feeling the best. I tried to go out for timed practice, it felt like a knife was put in my wrist and it hurt so bad, just jumping the finish line and stuff like that. I got it checked out and it’s a clean break of the scaphoid, which is unfortunate. I wanted to finish this season on a high. Without a ride for next year, it’s important for me to have some results here in the end, but that’s just Motocross. I think I’ve been doing a good show in the past 8-10 GPs, being solid and consistent. I didn’t have really any of those standout rides, because I’ve just not been getting the starts. But I know I’m a good rider, I know I’m solid, always strong at the end of the motos, and I’m sure some of the team bosses out there also are seeing that, so hopefully we can get something sorted throughout the winter. The scaphoid break is in a good place, so it should heal quite nicely, because it’s in the part where blood flow is streaming to it, so it should heal up in about 6 to 8 weeks”.

“I’m just maximum unlucky”

The injury came from a relatively minor incident, making the situation even more frustrating for Horgmo. Despite the setback, he is determined to use the challenges of the 2026 season as motivation heading into the winter.

“It was a little bit heavy. It wasn’t really that big, it was after the start, the first double there, and I kind of just made one roll, and that’s it. It was not a big impact or anything, and Pancar saw it, we talked afterwards and he said how the hell did you injure yourself there? I’m like, I don’t know, I’m just maximum unlucky. I even tipped over to the right, and somehow I hurt my left hand. It’s just how my season’s been going. Everything is a big, big challenge thrown at me, and I’m sure I’m going to come out of this really strong for next year”.

Horgmo confident his consistency can secure a 2027 ride

With no confirmed ride for next season at the time of the interview, Horgmo knows that securing a ride will be one of his biggest priorities over the winter.

While he acknowledges that his statistics might not immediately stand out, the Norwegian believes his consistency, professionalism and experience make him a valuable option for teams looking to strengthen their line-up.

Horgmo also feels that he has the ability to take another step forward in terms of results if given the right opportunity and support.

“I think I would take my season and put it into ChatGPT and then do an overall ranking, and I think, in the end, okay, my stats are not crazy good, but I think ChatGPT would say I’m a solid rider, because you can see the results have been consistent. I think the professionalism that I bring, and also a bit of experience, and I’m easy to work with in a way. Everything outside the riding is good too. Media, blogs and then the riding also is good. So, I just need somebody to take me on board and get me that small step even higher on the results sheets”.

Kevin Horgmo’s 2026 season has been marked by challenges, but the Norwegian remains determined to secure a place on the MXGP grid for 2027. With his scaphoid injury expected to heal in around six to eight weeks, his immediate focus will be recovery before turning his attention towards the winter and finding a team willing to give him the opportunity he is looking for.
