Interview: Kay de Wolf on Loket and his future – 125cc!

Young Dutch talent, Kay de Wolf is a youngster going places in a hurry. Unfortunately, de Wolf didn’t win the EMX85 Championship in Loket but speed certainly wasn’t the issue.

The Dutch rider crashed at the start of the first moto and came from dead last to sixth, another lap and he would have been fifth! The second moto went to plan though as he got a holeshot and pulled away from the rest of the field. De Wolf had to be happy with second overall on the day which is still a good result.

Later in the year, de Wolf will travel to Australia to race the Junior World Championship where he’ll hope to go one better.

We caught up with de Wolf to discuss Loket and his plans for the future, watch out for him in the EMX125 class next year!

Gatedrop: Kay, we are here at Loket for the EMX85 Championship. You must be frustrated not to win the overall but on the other side at least the speed was good!

Kay de Wolf: In the first race I had a start crash and I came back to sixth, it was a really good race, I fought hard! Today I got a really good start, I took the holeshot and I was pulling away from the rest of the field, I’m happy with the result and to win. Second overall, I am so happy with it but I wanted to go for the win. Yesterday I made the mistake and yeah, that meant second place.

Gatedrop: Even though you didn’t win the overall it must have been good to win the second moto. You kind of proved you were the quickest guy out there?

Kay de Wolf: Of course, yesterday I had good speed and I knew that I was fast. I came back so good so I knew today would be a good day. I took a good start and pulled free from the rest of the field, that was so good.

Gatedrop: What was your thoughts on the track? You obviously ride a lot of sand in the Netherlands but did you like the track here in Loket?

Kay de Wolf: Normally I ride in the sand of course. The last 4 – 6 weeks I trained a lot on the hard pack and that pays off. We had a second place and I am happy with it.

Gatedrop: You haven’t got much hard pack in Netherlands, where did you go ride the hard pack and do you think that’s benefitting you as a rider?

Kay de Wolf: Of course, on Wednesday we were in Germany and we had a good training. I am happy with it.

Gatedrop: You’ve won two Dutch Championships now, you must be happy to have two Dutch titles under your belt?

Kay de Wolf: I am pretty happy with my Dutch Masters title. The work has paid off!

Gatedrop: Do you know what you will do next year yet, you look quite good for the 85cc now so maybe you’re ready for the 125cc?

Kay de Wolf: Yeah, I will go now to the 125cc. I will do the best I can in the EMX125. I hope to win again in the future.

Gatedrop: When will you start riding the 125cc?

Kay de Wolf: On the 25th and 26th of August I go to Australia but when I come back from Australia I will start training on the 125cc. I will still race the 85cc for the rest of the Dutch Championship but train on the 125cc to do my best for next year.

Gatedrop: For the EMX125 next year, will you put any pressure on yourself for the results or just take it as a learning year?

Kay de Wolf: Yeah, it’s a learning year so I am going to enjoy it. I hope for the top ten I think but also points. Every time I score points then I will be happy with it.

Gatedrop: Just on the Junior World Championship in Australia later in the year, what are your goals for that?

Kay de Wolf: I am going to do my best at the Junior World Championship. It’s only one day like this and we saw yesterday that I made a crash that I came back but I didn’t win. That’s the part of one race, normally the world championship is a lot of races in MXGP and everything but for me it’s only one race. The trip will be fun and I am going to enjoy it.

Gatedrop: Have you been outside Europe before?

Kay de Wolf: No I’ve never rode there but I am looking forward and like I said, I will enjoy myself.
