Despite the pain and everyone wanting to congratulate him, Lucas Coenen gave us a couple of minutes of his time to discuss Belgium’s brilliant MXoN win and riding through the pain to do it – he almost didn’t even race!
“Unbelievable,” said Lucas. “Last Sunday I was leaning on my couch, Joel called me, I was almost trying. I was not gonna ride and somehow Joel brought me to Belgium with a kitty and he made it happen. I don’t know how that second moto after she lapsed I was already, my leg was completely tired from the first moto already. I just a bit on my tongue and the grit, you know.
“Honestly, I spoke with Joel, he said you already did amazing (in moto one), you couldn’t do better. Nobody expected me to be here and already with the third place he said we still have a joker, you know. So I don’t know how I did it, just adrenaline and went through the pain, you know? It’s amazing to come back like this from rock bottom to coming back to bring back Belgium on top, so it’s amazing.”
