Marco Kamper got to catch up with the Coenen brothers at the end of the weekend in Agueda, and he asked them about their experience of racing their first AMA race in Colorado and it’s safe to say they love it in the US!
On the US experience:
Lucas: Well, it was fun. A dream come true to ride US tracks, so I enjoyed every part of it. It was a fun one, so just enjoy it. It’s completely different.
Sacha: Tracks are way wider there. Tracks are way wider there, so it’s way easier for us riders to have some speed and also tracks, let’s say are nicer, but in Europe also they are not cool, but let’s say the same tracks and all this kind of stuff, but Yeah, just nice there, yeah. Everything in one day is quite easy, you go there, you race and you go back home. So the body is not that tired, and yeah, here (MXGP) is quite long, three days, it’s getting really tired, but yeah, it’s the same for everyone. But yeah, I like it over there, fans were good, everything was nice, so yeah.
Having Belgian Roger De Coster as team manager and the special kit their wore in homage to The Man.
Lucas: I know that Roger is The Man. That’s why they call him. He’s a legend. So he’s one of the biggest persons in our sport, you know. To be honest, it’s like the biggest thing we could have, and it’s so good.
Roger used it (the cap). He was so happy. He was wearing them the whole weekend, and Red Bull had a good idea on that. And they killed it, and everybody loved it, also us.

Sacha: “It was just nice to do it, because we saw it, we were talking about it with some people, and yeah, I think it was pretty cool, everybody really liked it, so yeah, it was an honour to put this gear on and to ride it for a first race in the US, it was kind of amazing.
No, it’s just nice, you know, having a Belgian guy over there is quite nice, because you don’t have a lot over there, so yeah, I just loved it there.
Can you learn anything from the US experience to us in MXGP?
Lucas: Sometimes a little bit, but you know, it’s new bike, new track, all the times, you know, like different schedule, so it’s completely different.
Sacha: Yeah, always a little bit (of confidence), but it was just nice to win it, and it was a dream come true.
