Race One: After the opening moto in Australia, Daniela Guillen has one hand on the title – it was actually Nellie Fransson who led for the first couple of laps with Fontanesi and Guillen behind her.
It was Guillen who was making things happen to pass both to get into the lead and she never looked back. Fontanesi would get Fransson but by that time, Guillen was gone at the front. With a couple of laps to go Van Drunen and Duncan also passed Fontanesi so it’s now 13 points she trails Guillen with one moto to go.
It wasn’t the race that Lala Turner would have wanted after a couple of crashes – she ended up in eighth.
Race Two: Turner got the holeshot in race two and showed how impressive her sprint speed is as she pulled away from the rest of the pack. It was Duncan who was second as Guillen didn’t get the best of starts. It took the Spaniard a few laps to pass Fransson but as soon as she did she put the hammer down. She caught Duncan as the pair started to reel in Turner.
Duncan then dropped it as soon as she approached Turner’s rear wheel which which give Guillen a clear track. The RFME GasGas rider already had the overall win and more importantly – the championship by sitting second but she wanted to make a statement. She passed Turner to win the championship in style – Guillen becomes the first Spanish WMX world champion.
Fontanesi still had a great season but missed out on the title – after race one she actually went to hospital to get checked out after severe stomach problems making it hard to breathe – she had a crash in race two so only finished seventh. A disappointing end but she can be proud of her efforts.
