Injury update: Pauls Jonass – surgery required

Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Pauls Jonass is scheduled for surgery next Thursday after sustaining an injury during Time Practice at the MXGP of France in Villars Sous Ecot.

The Latvian rider, who had recently returned to action following a heavy fall in Switzerland, was attempting a fast lap in Timed Practice when a slower rider crossed the track on a steep downhill. This forced Jonass to switch lines in the deep ruts, resulting in a heavy fall.

Jonass returned to the paddock with a severely swollen thumb. Despite an unsuccessful attempt to ride through the pain on the test track, he withdrew from the French Grand Prix and returned to Belgium to consult a hand specialist.

Following closer assessment on Monday 22nd May, Jonass was diagnosed with a torn ligament and will require surgery. He will have an operation on his right thumb in Herentals, Belgium, on Thursday 25th May, and as a result, will miss his home Grand Prix, the MXGP of Latvia which is set to take place in Kegums on the weekend of June 4th.

This injury marks another unfortunate setback for the talented Latvian, who had been eagerly anticipating his return to racing. An update on his treatment plan and potential return to action will be shared in due course.
