Tortelli on the new MXGP season

Former world champion, Sebastien Tortelli, says he is looking forward to the 2022 MXGP season but is disappointed Jeffery Herlings is injured, compromising his chances of defending the title.

“I think it’s going to be a great season again. I am bummed out that Jeffrey got injured, he’s the reigning champion and definitely the strongest last year so it’s sad not to have him here,” said Sebastien in our Gatedrop podcast.

“I think the guys are up for the challenge. Tim has been amazing and strong for Honda and KTM has Herlings, Gas Gas has Prado. Prado will be a future world champion, there is no doubt. I don’t know if it will be this year or not but he is a talented rider and had the style to be there. We will see, there are a lot of possible contenders for the championship it comes down to two guys who will battle for a championship, it’s never a bunch of guys. We see guys stronger at the beginning of the season and weaker at the end.

“Last year was full of surprises. If you had asked me after five rounds I would have given the title to Gajser, no doubt. It completely turned around with Jeffrey coming back from injury, I was definitely not thinking he was able to get that championship, it was amazing.”

So would Tortelli like to race Herlings for a world championship?

(laughs) ”Difficult question! For sure I would have loved too but I raced RC and that was the same! Every rider has his time, it’s hard to compare because the bike changes quit a bit, you are best of a time and an era.”
