Race results: WMX RD2 – Van Drunen wins at Riola

After great racing in Spain WMX delivered again in the first moto for round two at a rough Riola track.

Lotte van Drunen got a bad start after riders crashed in front of her which allowed Kiara Fontanesi to get the holeshot and assert her authority at the front. Lynn Valk had other ideas though as she passed the Italian to pull away at the front.

Guillen was third and just couldn’t pass Fontanesi but finally she made a move and then caught Valk to pass and take the lead.

Van Drunen had other ideas though, she was virtually last going around the first corner but got into eighth by the end of the first lap. She got into second but after Valk repassed her it looked like she had to much work to do to catch and pass Guillen.

All of a sudden backmarkers played their part. Guillen had six ahead of her on the final lap and got caught up behind one which allowed Van Drunen to catch – she then sailed around the outside with two corners to go for pass of the weekend and to take a super win on the final lap.

After over night track prep, the track wasn’t as rough for race two but this time everyone came through the first corner unscathed.

All the heavy hitters were there on the opening lap but it was Guillen on the move on the opening lap as she made a couple of quick passes. Van Drunen didn’t take long to follow Guillen through to second and then a couple of laps later she passed the Spanish girl for the lead to take another dominate win.

Lynn Valk started in fifth but made two passes to come home in third to get on the podium.

Fontonesi had a solid ride for fourth despite some early race pressure behind from Courtney Duncan.

In terms of the championship, it couldn’t be any closer as van Drunen and Guillen are tied on points heading to round three.
