Race results: MXGP World Championship RD5 – Pietramurata – Herlings wins!

Race One: What an opening moto as Jeffrey Herlings came from 12th to first, passing race-long leader, Romain Febvre, with two laps to go, having been 15 seconds back with 15 minutes to go, to claim a scintillating race win! Herlings is only six points off Lucas Coenen after the Belgian crashed in the same corner Herlings did yesterday early in the moto while second but came back from outside the top 20 to 12th. Tom Vialle was solid as ever in third, also making points on Coenen.

Race Two: It was another brilliant moto in MXGP with Jeffrey Herlings putting on another charge coming from eighth to second to win the GP bur he couldn’t quite find a way by Tim Gajser who took him first moto win on the Yamaha in front of a delighted Slovenian heavy crowd! Lucas Coenen crashed while leading but he had Gajser on his rear wheel and Herlings charging just four seconds back when the mistake occurred. Coenen got up in third and held off de Wolf to finish third and keep the red plate by four points over Herlings!

Herlings said: “I think I showed I had the speed all weekend. Even though I was in traffic I put down the fastest lap time. First moto, I came from about 15th to first, the second moto, tenth to second. Just couldn’t manage to pass Tim, he is always good at this track so it is no shame. The track didn’t allow me to get past him and he had good lines. We had a good day for the championship.”

Gajser was ectstatic with his win after riding in pain from his crash in Riola: “I’m speechless. I am super happy. Coming into this weekend, I knew it was going to be a difficult one, I was in a lot of pain after my crash in Riola, but I gave it my all. I think fans also helped me to push until the end in that moto. We worked a lot this week to get me ready to race, it’s incredible.”
