Interview: Lucas Leok – chasing the dream

It’s hard not to be impressed seeing young Lucas Leok racing as he’s very talented and has a lovely efficient smooth style. Not to mention he’s very young – he wasn’t even young enough for the 85cc class at the Junior World Championship last year and this year he won a moto finishing second overall – if he got a better start in race one he had the pace to stand on the top step.

He’s trying to follow in his Dad (Aigar) and his Uncles (Tanel) footsteps in becoming a future GP rider and seeing him rip on the 85cc he could have a very bright future if he keeps developing and can avoid a big injury.

We caught up with the young Estonian after Heerde to discuss a range of topics which you can watch, listen or read below:

GateDrop: Lucas, overall a very good weekend for you here at Heerde. Can you talk me through both of your moto’s?

Leok: In the first race I had not the best start but the second race I got the holeshot. In the first race I passed four or five riders I think to finish in fourth. The second race, I took the holeshot and led the whole race. I made a good gap back to Townley but I finished second overall because in the first race I was fourth.

GateDrop: You’re still very young – you weren’t even old enough for this last year! Did you expect to be right at the front or what were your goals coming into the weekend?

Leok: I was thinking like I would be riding in the top ten. But in the second moto when I took the holeshot I was riding in my flow and was able to make a good gap.

GateDrop: Are you happy with second or is there a part of you disappointed not to win? I think in the second moto you probably showed you were the fastest…

Leok: Yeah, I was the fastest in the second race and yeah I wanted to take the first place but I could only get fourth in the first moto.  It meant I ended up second.

GateDrop: How did you find the track? Yesterday was very deep and whilst today it might not have been as deep it still got pretty rough…

Leok: Yesterday was really deep with a lot of long ruts. Today was sandy and even more ruts, I prefer it like this! I really enjoy these type of tracks and conditions.

GateDrop: Do you like the hard pack conditions as well?

Leok: Hard pack is good as well but sand is more… better!

GateDrop: This weekend you go to Loket, what are your goals for Loket?

Leok: I want to ride in the top five or top seven, something like this…

GateDrop: Only top five or seven after winning a moto today? (laughs)…

Leok: (smiles) Yeah, I don’t know, we will see.

GateDrop: What is it like having Aigar as your Dad and having his guidance? He knows what it takes to be a GP rider…

Leok: Yeah, he tells me to just go on the track and just enjoy the track. Just enjoy the weekend, yeah!

GateDrop: For the future, what’s the big dream?

Leok: (without any hesitation) MXGP world champion (smiles).
