In his latest video, Haiden Deegan explained why he wore the Jett shirt that said RIP Jett and referenced his girlfriend and gave an insight into his real motivation for doing it – marketing the sport!
“Going to the press conference now, talk some smack, get the people entertained…..no harsh feelings bro (referencing the Jett t-shirt) this shirt is criminal, talking a lot of crap on this shirt! No-one in this sport knows how to get people talking like I do. No matter if you guys like me or not, ain’t no-one ever talked about someone like this before, everyone has an opinion no matter if you like me or not, it’s emotion. This sh1t is gona do numbers, shares. We are doing this as troll stuff, this isn’t to heart, we are doing this as trolls because I know the media is going to take it to another level.
I think they don’t recognise the fact why the numbers are so much bigger, I’m not gona say it’s all me but I am bringing something to the sport, viewership and controversy, I think that’s why everyone tunes in, that’s not why everyone tunes in, but it’s a good reason why numbers are going up. I feel like it needs to be talked about a little more but it’s hard for people to accept that. I think this (Pala) is going to be one of the biggest Nationals ever.
Interestingly, Deegan revealed the dichotomy between the performative/cocky trolling and the deep down reality of respect for his new competitors when he said after the press conference…”I tried to chirp a little but it’s hard to chirp too because you go to respect the guys next to you. I respect 90% of the guys up there, that’s why it’s hard, I want to respect the GOAT’S of the 450 class now.”
