Chad Reed is preparing to bring TwoTwo Motorsports back, with a major partner potentially involved. Michael Jordan has been mentioned, while the Australian is also planning for the sporting futures of his sons.
The return of TwoTwo Motorsports is becoming more concrete, although there is still a long way to go. More than ten years after closing the doors of his team, Chad Reed is seriously considering a return to team ownership. The 44-year-old Australian is currently exploring several avenues to secure the partners needed to bring the project to life, with the stated aim of having riders on the starting gates as early as 2028.
The former US Supercross champion provided further details about the project during the opening round of the Australian Supercross Championship in Townsville, where he was present as an ambassador. Behind his desire to revive the team is also a family vision. Having recently returned to Florida, where he purchased a 120-acre property, Chad Reed has big plans for the sporting futures of his children.
“I’ve made some big changes in my life lately, I’ve moved back to Florida and bought a 120-acre property. My kids are chasing their dreams, and if one of them manages to achieve their goals, I don’t really know if there’s a team out there that I’d actually want to see them ride for. From there, we thought, ‘Why don’t we start our own team again?’ It would be really cool to bring TwoTwo Motorsports back to life.
I love being able to give back to the sport that has given me so much, I love this sport. So yes, there’s a lot of truth to this story: things are moving forward,” he explained.
This project is more than just an idea on paper. Chad Reed is genuinely preparing for a new adventure as a team owner, but establishing a competitive outfit requires time, money and meticulous organisation.
“2028 would be the goal, but it’s going to be complicated. We need to build the team buildings and order two brand-new semi-trucks. All of that needs to be finalised by January 2027 so everything is ready in time. In reality, everything needs to be operational around mid-August next year, when we should be able to sign certain riders. And there won’t be many good riders available for 2028. To be honest, Tate won’t be able to race Supercross until 2029.
Waiting until then wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, but the goal remains to return as soon as possible.”
The 2028 target therefore depends on several factors. Beyond securing the necessary financial resources and logistical arrangements, the rider market could also influence the final decision. While Chad Reed wants to return to the paddock as soon as possible, he doesn’t intend to rush into the project without proper preparation.
Chad Reed is never far away…
Another factor fuelling discussion about this potential comeback is the identity of the investors who could support the project. Michael Jordan, the basketball legend who is already involved in motorsport through his own team, has been linked to the plans for some time. Chad Reed confirmed that discussions have taken place, although he stopped short of officially confirming the former Chicago Bulls player’s involvement.
“Is there any truth to the rumours about Michael Jordan and having a partner of that calibre? 100%. The discussions are definitely happening, behind closed doors. I’m not going to do this alone; it’s going to take a partner of a certain calibre. Will it be Michael? I don’t know the answer to that yet. But I think it’s awesome, really awesome, and I’m very excited,” the Australian revealed.
One thing appears certain: if TwoTwo Motorsports returns, Chad Reed doesn’t want to carry the burden of such a venture alone. The Australian is looking for a partner capable of providing the project with the resources needed to fulfil its ambitions.
However, behind this desire to relaunch TwoTwo Motorsports is also a very personal motivation: giving his sons the opportunity to develop in the best possible environment and, perhaps one day, see them compete within factory teams.
A promising family story could be about to unfold, potentially giving the return of TwoTwo Motorsports an entirely new dimension.
