It’s no secret that, in some cases, people in Europe want to see team USA race but not necessarily win the MXoN, it is usually team USA versus the world.
But this year, it feels different. Plessinger is a fan favourite anyway but with two legends like Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac stepping up last minute, I am not sure anyone would or could begrudge these guys the win if they pull it off.
Without Webb and Tomac stepping up, there simply would be no team USA this year, which would have been awful for the event and the fans. So to have, of all people, two of the biggest names in the sport stepping in, star names on Star bikes giving USA a big chance to win, it’s superb for the event and the tens of thousands of fans flocking to the event for the first and maybe getting to see Eli Tomac or Cooper Webb ride in person for the first or maybe last time in their lives. That means a lot to people.
Cooper Webb is dropping down to a 250, and cancelled his holiday in Hawaii to do this, with talk that he gave up 10k to race this race for America! Eli Tomac said yes last minute when he didn’t have to and now the UK and European fans will get to see two of this generations top stars, who two weeks ago weren’t supposed to be here. And don’t forget a bonus Herlings v Tomac rematch!
Inside the US, the fans are pumped, and the riders have less external pressure and more global appreciation for their efforts . Three AMA champs taking on world for their country. They believe they can win, and if they do, everyone will applaud the effort. It could be quite story!
