250cc race results: AMA Nationals RD9 – Unadilla

Race One:  Hunter Lawrence took a huge step to the title in race one after bad luck for Haiden Deegan. The American struggled in the first few laps to find his flow and lost positions, before he willed himself to go the pace of Hunter when he passed his rival. Deegan shadowed Lawrence into the top three but then, unbelievably, had the bike quit on him resulting in a costly DNF, just as he was third with Hunter second and Kitchen leading in the last five minutes of the moto and a race win and title battle coming down to the wire.

Hunter said of the DNF: “It sucks. Everyone is talking about pressure. This isn’t pressure, I chose to do this, pressure is when my family couldn’t eat.”

Race Two: Justin Cooper won the moto but Hunter Lawrence took the overall win with a second place to cap a perfect day for the Lawrence family. But it was more trouble for Deegan who, thanks to the ludicrous rule on America of starting race two where you finished race one, started 38th gate pick and came from way back to tenth despite a fall but a double punishment for a bike mechanical seems unfair and he’s now lost second in the points chase, dropping to fourth  36 behind Hunter.
