Rumour: Ruben Fernandez stepping up to MXGP in 2022?

Despite picking up an injury it was still a brilliant year for Spanish talent, Ruben Fernandez as he picked up five podium’s racing the MX2 World Championship. After signing with the 114 Honda team coming into the season he certainly didn’t disappoint and proved to be a strong signing.

At the final two rounds of the season, the HRC Honda team decided to draft him into the MXGP World Championship class on a full factory bike to see what he could do on the 450cc and seeing him race there, you wouldn’t have thought it was his first GP’s on the 450cc with little time to prepare.

At the penultimate round of the series, Fernandez finished a very impressive sixth overall on his MXGP debut and he backed that up with eighth overall at the final round of the series.

Despite having a year left to contest the MX2 World Championship and agreeing with the team at the beginning of the season he’d be staying to race MX2 in 2022 – we believe the plans have changed.

We believe Fernandez will be staying with the 114 Motorsports Honda team but he’ll be racing the MXGP World Championship in 2022 in what will be his rookie season in the class – he’s also likely to have factory backing. Like the F&H Kawasaki team, the 114 Motorsports Honda team have focused on the MX2 class up until this point but both team’s have a new challenge for the season ahead.

We also believe the team have signed a promising young rider from the EMX250 series to contest the MX2 World Championship for the 2022 season but we can’t comment on the rider just yet – it’s expected to be official soon.

We will bring you the news as soon as it’s officially confirmed.
