One rider that has plenty of potential in MXGP is Norwegian, Cornelius Tøndel who spent the 2024 season under the Schmicker KTM awning. Despite missing a couple of GP’s due to injury, Tøndel ended up fifteenth in the MXGP World Championship standings – not bad at all for one of the youngest riders in the class.
We believe that for the 2025 season, Tøndel will be on the move and should be under the JWR Honda awning. The move would see him making the switch from KTM to Honda machinery. It’s a team that Tøndel knows well as he raced for them in 2023 during the final part of the season after making the move up from MX2 to MXGP to end his season.
The Swedish based team clearly like Tøndel as we understand they have struck a deal to contest MXGP in 2025. The team have worked with Alvin Ostlund the past few years but he will now focus on racing in Sweden after inking a deal with FF Triumph Racing for the 2025 season.
As well as racing the MXGP World Championship, Tøndel may have the option to travel to America to contest at least one round of the AMA Nationals as the calendar allows. Ostlund contested two rounds this year with the JWR Honda team at Southwick and RedBud – It is though that Tøndel may have the opportunity to do the same in 2025.
The JWR Honda team are also expected to sign up Swedish talent, Hugo Forsgren to contest the EMX250 championship in 2025 as well. We also reported that Håkon Østerhagen could be signing with the team in 2025 but that deal is now in the balance as the Norwegian may be exploring other options.
It remains to be seen what the Schmicker KTM will do in 2025 as they ran two MXGP World Championship riders this year but both Sterry and Tøndel are both on the move for the upcoming season.
