Race results: MXGP World Championship RD17 – Mantova

Race One:

The carnage started in the first corner as Tim Gajser got bumped and went straight on around turn one and cut the track! Jeffrey Herlings decided to make things very hard from himself after an opening lap crash dropping him from second to fifteenth but what a recovery ride!

Herlings caught the top four and made a superb pass on Gajser on the last lap. Romain Febvre was controlling things at the front but at the end the trio of riders behind started to catch and Herlings was right on his rear wheel at the finish line – another lap and who knows!

Gajser held on from Antonio Cairoli but got docked five spots – Lupino at the MXoN got docked ten for a similar move so he can count himself lucky!

Ruben Fernandez who’s only had a few weeks on the 450cc had a superb race to come home in fourth but actually took points off Gajser!

The second moto was all about Jeffrey Herlings as he led every lap and dominated proceedings to take his 98th overall Grand Prix victory. However, Romain Febvre also had a good day to go 1-2, the Factory Kawasaki rider might not have won the overall but he keeps the red plate going into the final round. 

Three points now split Herlings and Febvre with the final round taking place at Mantova on Wednesday. After getting docked in race one, Tim Gajser didn’t get the best of starts in race two and had to be content with third but he’s now 15 points behind Febvre in the championship chase with only two moto’s left – that will be tough to claw back but you can never rule him out. 

Antonio Cairoli had a good day despite getting frustrated in behind Jorge Prado in race two but he still managed third overall and a podium in front of his home crowd.
