A roller-coaster night in Melbourne saw Hunter Lawrence win the overall with a last lap pass on Dean Wilson in the final moto with Webb and Jett Lawrence both not even racing moto three!
Hunter hit the gate in race one and came through to fifth, while Jett had a bad start himself coming through to second with Cooper Webb taking an easy win.
But race two was a disaster for Webb and Jett. With Hunter out front, Webb crashed with Matt Moss and left the track holding his arm and out for the night. Meanwhile, Jett, after being cut off at the start by Webb out of the gate, crashed on lap one and had his bike ran over so badly, he was forced to DNF and couldn’t race moto three due to the bike damage.
In the third and final race it was Savatgy on the brink of clinching the Aussie SX title who took the lead over Wilson but Savatgy then got a flat tyre as Wilson took the lead and his slim title hopes almsot back on! Savatgy, though, rode around the rest of the race to finish 18th and take the title but Wilson was still leading as they entered the last lap and was doing all he could to hold crowd favourite Hunter Lawrence off, despite his dislocated shoulder from just a week ago! But, on the last lap Hunter made his way around Wilson for the win the clinch the overall and huge cheers from the home crowd.
Wilson’s brave second gave him third overall, with Jed Beaton consistent for second.
Hunter said: “Awesome, what sweet moment, unreal! What a turnout, record attendeance, we sold the place out and blew the roof off it. Massive round of applause for everyone that showed up tonight, you guys are legends. This was awesome, can’t wait till next year and see what we bring.”
Shane McElrath took the overall win and the title in SX2 while Tate Reed, Chad’s son, got a podium in the 85 class to make a it memorable night for the Reed family.
