Filippo Zonta starts up his own race team

Filippo Zonta has confirmed his plans for the 2022 season and he’s decided to create his own race team in order to continue racing. The Italian who contested some EMX Open events this year will do the full series in 2022 to try and win the title alongside the Italian Championship and selected MXGP events are also probable.

The Italian will race with GasGas machinery and has named his setup the FZ Motorsport team. We decided to catch up with Zonta to discuss the decision to start up his own team and expectations for the 2022 season.

The decision to start up his own race team…

“The decision to make the 2022 season with my own team came because to find a team in the MXGP paddock is every year harder or you need a bag of money. I had some requests from national teams but I think to still have something to prove in the international scene and with my personal team I will be free to make the races that I want without any stops from anyone because of no interest on them. With it I also want to give more prominence to my family workshop and my personal sponsors”.

How he feels on the GasGas 450cc so far…

I feel good with the GasGas 450cc. I have just started to ride with the bike so I still have to adapt it to myself. But I can already feel that is a very competitive bike with great potential. It has a lot of power, but manageable, it is slim and light. Maybe initially everything will be a bit tougher because we are in the building phase, but anyway now we put on the work and we will see what comes.

Expectations for 2022…

For sure I will try to end in the top of the box. This year I won in Maggiora and then I raced in Loket were I ended in second place. It was bad for me that I couldn’t race the complete championship so I would like to try this year. Then there will be also the Italian motocross championship with good riders and I will try to fight with the top guys.

I want to thank my family, GASGAS Italy, Gabrielli Moto, all my sponsors and partners and everyone who believes in me. See you on the track!
