There’s plenty of optimism surrounding Isak Gifting heading into the 2026 season. After showing impressive speed throughout last year, expectations were high that the Swedish rider could take another major step forward this term.
Stability has played a key role in that belief. Gifting signed on to remain with the Italian-based JK Yamaha, and for 2026 he benefits from increased backing from the Yamaha factory. On paper, it is the ideal combination — continuity within the team structure, paired with stronger technical and logistical support. However, the off-season hasn’t been straightforward.
Shoulder Injury Disrupts Preparations
Gifting has been managing a shoulder injury throughout the off-season, limiting both his riding time and overall preparation. After discussions between rider and team, it was decided early on that he would skip the International Italian Championship pre-season races, allowing him the best possible chance of being fully fit for the opening round of the MXGP World Championship in Argentina.
The focus was clear: return at full strength for the Grand Prix season opener. Unfortunately, that plan has now changed.
Although Gifting recently returned to the bike, lingering discomfort in his shoulder bring a change of plans. At MXGP level, it is important to be 100% fit – or as close to 100% as possible. After further evaluation, the decision has been made that Gifting will not make the trip to Argentina this weekend.
Targeting a Return in Spain
The immediate priority is recovery. Gifting will now continue rehabilitation with the aim of returning as soon as he can compete at 100 percent — or as close to it as possible.
The hopeful target is round two of the MXGP World Championship in Spain. Alternatively, he could make his comeback at the opening round of the Italian Championship, where he has a national title to defend.
While missing the opener is undoubtedly a setback, the long-term outlook remains positive. With factory support strengthened and clear potential shown last season, Gifting’s 2026 campaign may simply be starting a little later than planned — but the ambition for a breakthrough year remains firmly intact.
