Irish rider Lennox Dickinson is set to make his MXGP World Championship debut this weekend at the iconic Foxhill circuit. The opportunity came together at short notice, but after discussions with former Grand Prix rider and Irish MXoN team manager Martin Barr, the decision was made to take on the challenge and gain valuable experience at the highest level of the sport.
Speaking to GateDrop.com, Dickinson explained how quickly everything came together.
“The decision came together at pretty short notice. After talking it through with Martin Barr, we felt it was a good opportunity to take. It wasn’t something I planned to do, but when the chance came up, it made sense to give it a go”, Dickinson told GateDrop.com.
The Foxhill event will be Dickinson’s first-ever experience of an MXGP weekend, with the British rider eager to embrace the new surroundings and see how he measures up against the world’s best.
“I’m looking forward to it. It’s something different to what I’m used to, so it’ll be interesting to see how the weekend goes. I’m just looking forward to getting there and getting started. No, I’ve never been to an MXGP before so it’ll all be new to me. It’ll be a different environment and a different way of doing things, but that’s part of the reason for doing it.”
Rather than putting pressure on himself for results, Dickinson is approaching the weekend with a clear objective of learning and gaining experience that will benefit him in the future.
“I haven’t really set any expectations. The aim is just to learn as much as I can, get good experience, If I can come away from the weekend having learned more, I’ll be happy”.
Dickinson also paid tribute to the people behind the scenes who have helped make his Grand Prix debut possible, highlighting the support of his sponsors and, in particular, his family.
“It’s very much a small team effort. Cailum Meara from MySolar and Troy at True Custom House have both been a huge support. My mum and dad, in particular, go above and beyond to make opportunities like this possible. I’m really grateful to have people like that around me”, Dickinson concluded.
Making an MXGP World Championship debut is a significant milestone in any rider’s career, and Dickinson will head to Foxhill aiming to make the most of the opportunity as he takes his first steps onto the Grand Prix stage.
