Ricky Carmichael believes the SMX world championship comprising supercross, motocross and now into the SMX playoffs – three MX/SX hybrid tracks to decide the overall winner of the 31 race long series, is the pinnacle of dirt bike racing.
RC, a big part of Triumph that will compete in AMA and MXGP next season, told us: “Make no mistake about it, it is the pinnacle of dirt bike racing, of all the other world championships, in my opinion. We have the riders to stand for it, this is the pinnacle of dirt bike racing, so to win here and win this SMX world championship, that should be enough incentive to win not just going out and trying to dethrone Jett Lawrence. It’s going to be exciting. This is the last chance for the year for Chase and a lot of guys to beat him (Jett Lawrence) and win another championship.”
There is no doubt it is a high level elite series with an extra exciting new twist that make the riders have to be switched on for a 9 months of the race indoors and out with an all out battle on unique tracks to decide the champ in the final three SMX events of the season, but in pure motocross terms MXGP is also at the pinnacle with the versatility of tracks, countries and weather the riders need to win. They are very different and require different skills to win but fans are pretty spoilt right now following both series all year long!
