Team captain, Eli Tomac, was the only team USA man left standing on Saturday night in Las Vegas, evoking memories of last year when Sexton got injured but this year is even worse with Deegan breaking his collarbone and Sexton’s huge crash leaving him with a concussion.

Tomac was asked about team USA in the press conference on Saturday night. “Right now. I have no idea what happens. I mean, I’m more concerned about my team that got blown apart tonight. So who knows what happens? And I don’t know, I’ll take a couple days off and then put the moto suspension back on and go from there. But, yeah, tonight was terrible for Team USA. So, I don’t know what happens.

Who would he want as his teammates? “Really, it’s whoever’s motivated to do it and wants to do it and go from there. So they need to be knocking on the door and wanting to do it. Whoever it is. I will just, I guess, see who comes knocking.”

As things stand it looks like RJ Hampshire and Justin Cooper who could be ready to answer America’s call. Both riders have the speed on a 250 or 450 and both have experience of the event, still giving team USA a shot at the win.

*Update Haiden Deegan has had surgery on his collarbone and says he would still like to race at Ironman. More here.
