Camden McLellan has been quietly putting together a strong season in the MX2 World Championship – and making history along the way. While Mikkel Haarup gave Triumph Racing their first MX2 World Championship podium last year, it was McLellan who delivered the manufacturer’s first-ever moto win, storming to victory at Arco di Trento back in April.
The South African talent also stood on the podium at the brutal Riola Sardo circuit in Sardinia, and there’s no doubt that his sights are now firmly set on climbing to the top step of the podium before the end of the season and securing his first MX2 GP overall win.
Coming into 2025, McLellan was in the final year of his contract with Triumph Racing, and early-season paddock talk hinted that he could be on the move at the end of the year. At the time, McLellan acknowledged the pressure that comes with a contract year.
“Not from the team, I put a lot of pressure on myself. It’s contract year, no doubt you’re thinking of that, especially when I went down, I was like, that’s my season gone, and it’s contract year. So it’s there, it’s lingering in the back, but mainly I just want to do good, I want to be up front, and I know I can be,” McLellan told us after his moto win at Arco di Trento.
We recently checked in with Triumph Racing team manager Vincent Bereni for an update on McLellan’s future. While he stopped short of confirming the South African’s stay, he made it clear the team would be happy to keep him onboard.
“We run the programme, and we have the direction we would like to take – we feed this back to Triumph, but the final call is with them on what happens next and for sure they are also working on the long-term plans based on the last two years. We worked hard to help Camden to make a name in MX2 and as a team we are happy if he stays with us, but there is no confirmation either way at present,” Bereni told GateDrop.com.
Behind the scenes, there has reportedly been plenty of interest in McLellan. We understand he received at least two offers from other MX2 GP teams, along with interest from a team in the AMA paddock. However, it now appears McLellan has opted to stick with what he knows and where he feels comfortable.
The word in the paddock is that McLellan will remain with Triumph Racing for the 2026 season – and not only that, but he’s expected to ink a new two-year deal. Such a deal would carry him through the remainder of his MX2 GP career, which is capped by the U23 age rule. By the end of 2027, McLellan will face another big decision: step up to the MXGP World Championship or consider a new challenge in America.
That’s still a long way off. For now, McLellan remains focused on progressing in the MX2 World Championship and challenging for the title before he ages out.
