It’s the team everyone wanted, the three biggest names in America and the three riders with the most status and speed are set to try and stomp the opposition on home turf for team USA at Ironman in two months time.
Eli Tomac has been there and done that numerous times, last year he nearly led the team to victory but Australia and that thorn in his side. Jett Lawrence, did enough to take the win. This time, Tomac has an even stronger team than 2024 to take on the world.
Chase Sexton was supposed to be in the team last year but injury at the final round of SMX ended that dream, now America and the rest of the world need to hope Sexton can complete SMX for the first time in his career and remain injury free for the biggest race of the year. Sexton has shown he has lost none of his speed since his comeback, he is back to his best but it is likely to be Sexton’s final race on a KTM, just as it will be Tomac’s final race on the Yamaha. They will want to make it a race to remember.
The rookie is the man who has won everything in America on a 250, Haiden Deegan. And after not suiting up for the last couple of years when he was wanted on the team, Deegan has finally said yes, is it a coincidence it is in America? Maybe. Either way Deegan could be key to America winning, the MX2 results and usually essential to team victory and the Deegan is the best rider by a distance in America on 250 right now, but Kay De Wolf might have something to say if he can gate with the US superstar!
Deegan also might find a different level of pressure at Ironman on the first weekend in October, but he has never lacked confidence – could he add his name to legends Cairoli and Villopoto in winning a moto on a 250?
Despite the obvious strength from team Australia with the Lawrence brothers, the teenage superstar from MXGP, Lucas Coenen, presumably leading strong Belgian team with the Dutch, if Herlings and de Wolf are picked and on form along with Coldenhoff, all capable of being the mix for the win. The USA, with this team, are the overwhelming favourites at home.
They simply have to win, there can be no excuses, this is the best they have to offer and losing for this powerhouse team of pure speed is basically unthinkable. Team USA with Sexton, Tomac and Deegan are the overwhelming favourites for the 2025 MXoN.
