Race report: Riola MXGP – De Wolf and Febvre victorious!

Romain Febvre took the MXGP overall win in the deep dune sand of an undulating Riola in a battle to the flag with Tim Gajser in race two after race one winner, Lucas Coenen, crashed out spectacularly in the second moto!

18 year old Coenen ran away with it in race one and had a ten second lead until he tipped over near the end. He then had to pick up the pace in the final couple of laps to hold off Glenn Coldenhoff with Bonacorsi having a great ride for third, ahead of Febvre and Gajser.

But race two was a different story, as Coenen went down in turn one and was forced to come through the pack, he was up to tenth after fifteen minutes but crashed hard after he collided in mid-air with Jeremy Seewer and that ended his day and hopes of a podium or even the overall win, such was his pace.

Jeffrey Herlings meanwhile, had got himself into an early lead and pulled away to about five seconds in the first couple of laps after only 20th in race one due to crippling arm pump. Herlings then got hit by arm pump ten minutes in and, five minutes later he was down to fourth with the Dutchman allowing Gifting, then Febvre and Gajser by as he tried to shake out the lactic acid.

Gifting then led in yet another great ride on the Yamaha but it was Febvre and then Gajser who would get by the Swede and enter their own battle for the win. Febvre would prevail and it was just as well, if Gajser had made the pass, Glenn Coldenhoff, by now third, who would have won the GP, but despite a last lap charge from Gajser, Febvre did enough for a huge win in the deep sand.

Febvre said: “First moto I got a good start but the first lap I didn’t ride good ang got passed. Second one I got the start, I took my time, Gifting was leading and I passed him and I knew Tim was behind and it was the battle for the overall. I felt so good the second moto, I was riding like training, it was so good to hold on and finally get the victory.”

in MX2 Kay de Wolf went 1-1 at Riola to take back the red plate but it was far from easy! De Wolf passed Sacha Coenen with a few laps to go in moto one as Coenen then went down big time eventually taking fifth. That left McLellan in second and he hounded De Wolf in the last couple of laps but couldn’t make the pass.

Race two and it was Adamo leading early but De Wolf took the lead at the halfway mark and slowly pulled away – until he crashed! That let Adamo back into the lead and de Wolf an eight seconds gap to make up for the win. De Wolf regrouped and for the last three laps, Adamo and De Wolf put it all on the line for the win with De Wolf making an inside move stick to take the win!

That pass cost Adamo second overall with McLellan coming from the back in turn one right through to third with Sacha following him through the field in fourth but it was McLellan with a brilliant second overall, Adamo third and Coenen fifth overall, one point behind Längenfelder- that first moto crash proving costly for the Belgian.

De Wolf, who said he almost didn’t race the qualifying race after a big crash in timed practice, commented: “I made it a fun race. I was leading and they flattened the outside of the second turn, there was a big lump of dirt and I hit that and fell. Adamo had put quite a big gap on me but I knew I was going to be strong in the last five laps. Got everything together and did my own thing and managed to get the moto win, didn’t make it easy but for sure it was a fun one. To do that as my tenth GP win is pretty sick, it’s one I will remember forever.”
