It was Jett Lawrence who set the pace in the 450MX class at RedBud over his brother, Hunter Lawrence.
Justin Cooper was third fastest with Eli Tomac fourth and RJ Hampshire rounding out the top five.
Jorge Prado went faster in the second session to go seventh. Antonio Cairoli was tenth for Ducati on their debut in the USA and Cornelius Tøndel twelfth.
In the 250MX class, it was Ryder Difrancesco who put in a hot lap right at the end when it looked like Deegan would be on pole and Ryder backed it up again in Q2.
Deegan then went down hard and was limping when he finally recounted but did put in another flying lap, but was unable to take the number one spot off DiFrancesco.
Dilan Schwartz was third fastest with Jo Shimda fourth and Julien Beaumer rounding out the top five.
