MXGP: Fines possible for non-participation without valid reason

The official regulations for the 2026 season of the MXGP World Championship have now been published by the (FIM), and there are a couple of notable changes that teams and riders will need to be aware of heading into the new campaign.

One of the key updates relates to riders who are present at a Grand Prix but choose not to participate in practice sessions or races. Under the updated rules, riders must inform race direction if they decide not to take part. Failing to do so without a valid reason-such as an injury or a mechanical issue-could have consequences, including a significant fine or even suspension for up to two events.

“A rider who is present at an event and who does not take part in the practices and/or in the races and/or leaves the event must always inform the FIM Race Direction of the reasons for his non-participation. Any rider who refuses to start or withdraws from the event or part of it without a valid reason (e.g. injury or mechanical) shall have his case submitted to the FIM Race Direction and may be subject to a fine of €10’000.- and/or a suspension for up to two events“.

Another regulation change focuses on withdrawals for medical reasons. From 2026 onwards, any medical withdrawal must be officially supported with written confirmation from the Chief Medical, ensuring that the reason is formally documented.

“A team may withdraw a rider or a rider may withdraw from an event which has already started for valid reasons (injury of the rider, irreparable damage to the motorcycle(s) or in case of “force majeure”). A withdrawal for medical reasons must be supported by written information from the Chief Medical”.

These adjustments aim to add further clarity and structure to race weekend procedures, while also ensuring that withdrawals or non-participation are properly communicated and justified throughout the MXGP paddock during the 2026 season.
