In a brilliant insight into his mentality and what it meant to him to win a 450 supercross, Malcolm Stewart admitted the toll taking racing so seriously and the level big brother James could right at, all meant he didn’t want to take it serious and would prefer to go fishing!
The down to earth but bubbly character Malcolm has, is why so many people around the world were so happy to see him win in Tampa but Malcolm’s openness in dealing with being the little brother of James, shows that it wasn’t easy for him to deal with and it actually pushed him away from being all-in initially.
“I was a late bloomer”, said Malcolm. “I didn’t care about racing and, you know, a lot of just because of watching what my brother had gone through and also knowing I could never be able to fill the shoes and the accomplishments (he had). I don’t want to be that serious guy, I really want to go fishing but, if I can just do good on the weekend I will be able to afford some fishing rods, so I will juut do that!
“There have been several times where I was like, I don’t know if I can win a race, and it was almost to the point too where I accepted that, it’s not just about winning the race, right? You have to find that happy medium about yourself. That’s kind of what kept me motivated, seeing little kids and you sign an autograph or give them a pair of goggles, they’re crying! That has more value to me than winning a race, that’s just how I have always viewed things. Win/lose, it doesn’t matter, I’m just happy to be part of the show.
But he did add: “He was so happy for me, because I think deep down inside, he was probably like my little brother may never get it done, we are so connected. So, now we gotta go out there and try and win again, I am not shying away saying I won one, absolutely not. That has fuelled the fire, of course I want more. Just go for it, that’s what I learned and see where the cards fall.“
